Past news
Splendid is the lovechild of Angie Hart and Jesse Tobias. Its conception took place in Canada, August 1996, when Australian band Frente, fronted by Angie, arrived to play over two weeks of support dates for Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" tour, Jesse's band for the last two years (previously with Mother Tongue and Red Hot Chili Peppers). Three days later, the two were entangled. Catching trains and buses through hurricanes and busy schedules to reunite as often as the latter permitted. Finishing his tour on the opposite side of the globe from Angie, Jesse flew to Asia with his guitar to assist on Frente's final shows. Following more than two years each on the road, a months R&R in Melbourne, Australia found them both restless, homeless and already writing songs together. They then settled into a one-bedroom apartment in Los Feliz, Los Angeles. Amidst "off-road fever," newlywed hiccups and a dose of homesickness on Angie's part, they wrote -- and wrote and wrote. Two years and 45 songs were squeezed out of love and tears. An honest account of this experience can be heard on their to-be-released debut purge "Have You Got A Name For It." The title refers to the inarticulate language of love, not the lack of decisiveness on the final artwork. Recorded at Kingsway Studios in New Orleans, LA by produced Craig Ross ("Dead Spy Report" with David Garza & Don Piper), and engineer Ethan Allen. Angie sang, Jesse played guitar and keyboards, and the two were accompanied by: J.D. Foster on bass, double bass, percussion; Gordon Townsend on drums; Craig Ross on slide guitar and synthesizer; and Kathy Zeigler added backing vocals. It was then mixed at Kingsway and at the B-Room in Austin, TX. Additional mixing duties were handled by Robbie Adams (U2, Smashing Pumpkins) at Chung King Studios, NY. The icing was put on the cake in mastering by Joe Gastwirt at Oceanview, LA. Splendid is relieved and proud to present to you "Have You Got A Name For It," a document revealing domestic frailties and some gooey moments, riding on waves of melodic pop that is one minute acoustic, another electric, both sweet and haunting.
